December 28: Peace dollar
The Peace dollar is a United States dollar coin minted from 1921 to 1928, and again in 1934 and 1935. Designed by Anthony de Francisci, the coin resulted from a competition seeking designs emblematic of peace, and its reverse depicts an eagle at rest clutching an olive branch, with the legend “PEACE”. It was the last United States silver dollar to be struck for circulation. With the passage of the Pittman Act in 1918, the United States Mint was required to strike millions of silver

Thought for Today – Learn Meditation
“Why has meditation been the core practice of all wisdom paths for over two thousand years? Because it is the most effective method to access your innate wisdom, rediscover inner peace and enhance your creative ability. Meditation restores well being, and once your being is well again, all that you do will be successful and fulfilling. But maybe you think you are OK as you are. Perhaps you feel your being is well. But is it? Do you feel tense, worried, hopeless, mentally tired,

The Harmonium
Invented in the 1840s, the harmonium is a free-standing keyboard instrument in which air is forced over reeds by means of foot-operated bellows. Pitch is determined by the size of the reeds, while sound quality is determined by the size and shape of the tone chamber surrounding each reed. It is smaller and lighter than a piano, has no pipes, and is resistant to damage. Easier to ship that a piano, it was popular in 19th-century colonies, such as India, where it has developed in what unique

The Gibbet
A gibbet is a wooden structure resembling a gallows, from which the bodies of executed criminals were formerly hung for public view. Most popular in the 17th century, the gibbet was generally reserved for the worst offenders—traitors, murderers, highwaymen, pirates—and was intended to discourage others from committing similar crimes. The practice was formally abolished in England in 1834 but may have remained in use elsewhere into the 20th century. What infamous pirate was gibbeted?

The old adage that strangers are connected by “six degrees of separation” may need to be updated, suggests a recent study of 721 million active Facebook users. This modern version of Stanley Milgram’s so-called small world experiment found that the average number of acquaintances separating any two Facebook users is currently only 4.74. The study also finds that people’s interconnectedness over Facebook is growing. In 2008, the average Facebook user was 5.28 degrees away

"Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents, which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant."-
Aaron Copland (1900)
Famously public-spirited and generous, Copland came to be unofficially regarded as the US’s national composer. Although his earliest works show European influences, the American character of the greater part of his compositions is evident in his use of jazz and American folk tunes. He is best known for his three ballets based on American folk material: Billy the Kid, Rodeo, and Appalachian Spring, for which he won the Pulitzer Prize. For what films did Copland compose music?
The Apalachin Meeting (1957)
The Apalachin Meeting was a summit of some 100 Mafiosi from the US, Canada, and Italy that was raided after their fancy cars and out-of-state license plates aroused the suspicions of law enforcement agents in Apalachin, New York. Fifty-eight Mafiosi, including bosses Carlo Gambino and Vito Genovese, were detained. Perhaps the most significant consequence of the raid was that it confirmed the American Mafia’s existence, a fact that had long been denied by what prominent law enforcement

Louis Bonaparte (1778)
Louis was the younger brother of Napoleon Bonaparte, the first Emperor of France. He accompanied Napoleon on the Italian campaign and was his aide-de-camp in Egypt. At Napoleon’s insistence, he married Hortense de Beauharnais, but the union did not last. Proclaimed king of Holland in 1806, he was criticized by Napoleon for being too easy on his subjects. His unwillingness to join the Continental System led him into conflict with Napoleon and to eventually flee his kingdom. Who was

American Outlaw John Wesley Hardin Shot Dead (1895)
Hardin was an American desperado who claimed to have killed 42 men, one of them allegedly for snoring. He became a gambler and a gunman very early in life, but his friends and gunfighting skills helped him evade the authorities until 1877, when he was sentenced to 25 years for killing a sheriff. He studied law in prison and was released after serving 16 years. Pardoned in 1894, he passed the bar exam and began to practice law, but a local constable shot him to death a year later for what
The Deipnosophistae
Written in the 3rd-century by the Greek writer Athenaeus, the Deipnosophistae professes to be an account of three banquets held at the house of a scholar and wealthy patron of the arts. The work is invaluable for providing information about the Hellenistic leisure class of the Roman Empire, particularly in terms of food and sexuality. In the course of conversation, the banqueters quote about 700 authors, many of them otherwise unrecorded, and discuss the story behind what famous statue?

The Lost Colony: The Colony of Roanoke Is Found Deserted (1590)
Located off what is now the North Carolina coast, Roanoke Island was the site of the first English settlement in North America. Its original colonists, sent by Walter Raleigh, arrived in 1585 but stayed only a year. A second group led by John White arrived in 1587. Shortly thereafter, White returned to England for supplies. When he finally returned to the island, he found that all of the colonists had vanished. Their fate is still unknown. What possible clue was found carved into a tree there?

The Los Alfaques Disaster (1978)
The Los Alfaques disaster was an explosion that took place near a campsite in Tarragona, Spain, when a leaking tanker truck loaded with 23 tons of highly flammable liquid propylene ignited. This resulted in a massive explosion and fireball that reached over 1000° F (538° C) and destroyed everything within a 1000-ft (300-m) radius. It killed 217 people, including the truck’s driver, and severely burned more than 200. What regulations were later instituted to prevent future disasters of
Chemical Cause of Sunburn Soreness
Anyone who has ever suffered a serious sunburn knows that it hurts, but now scientists say they have begun to unravel why sunburns are so painful. They have pinpointed a chemical in the body, CXCL5, that triggers pain and is produced when the skin is exposed to the sun’s ultraviolet rays. Further testing on rats showed that a neutralizing antibody that targeted this chemical could reduce the sensitivity to pain caused by UVB irradiation. The findings could help researchers develop pain

The Arnolfini Portrait
The Arnolfini Portrait (1434) by Jan van Eyck is considered one of the most original and complex paintings in Western art history. It depicts a wealthy merchant, long thought to be Giovanni Arnolfini, and his wife. The incredible detail, realism, and use of light make this work remarkable, but it also stands out for the debate that it has inspired over the symbolism of certain elements, including the one lit candle in the chandelier, van Eyck’s unusually placed signature, and what else?
