Chemical Cause of Sunburn Soreness

Anyone who has ever suffered a serious sunburn knows that it hurts, but now scientists say they have begun to unravel why sunburns are so painful. They have pinpointed a chemical in the body, CXCL5, that triggers pain and is produced when the skin is exposed to the sun’s ultraviolet rays. Further testing on rats showed that a neutralizing antibody that targeted this chemical could reduce the sensitivity to pain caused by UVB irradiation.
